The most common causes of diarrhoea
There are many causes of acute diarrhoea but they’re not always easy to spot. In the case of a viral infection or food poisoning, the cause of diarrhoea may be quite obvious. But a poor diet lacking in fibre or a stressful lifestyle can also trigger an episode. Whatever the cause of diarrhoea, it can be a worry when you’re not sure what’s behind those frequent sprints to the bathroom.. Here are some of the most common causes of acute (short) bouts of diarrhoea:
- Viral or bacterial infection: Gastroenteritis
- Traveller’s diarrhoea
- Diet and health
- Menstruation
- Modern lifestyles: stress and anxiety
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
- Norovirus
If you experience diarrhoea that occurs over and over again for one month or more, you have what’s known as ‘chronic diarrhoea’. Causes of chronic diarrhoea can be varied and may indicate an underlying long-term health condition. If you do suffer from diarrhoea frequently, without apparent cause, you should see your GP for advice as you may become weak and dehydrated. Once you pinpoint the cause of diarrhoea you can regain control over your body and your day-to-day life.

Diet and health
It’s not just what you eat but how you eat that affects the health of your digestive system. Find out why you could still experience diarrhoea and other digestive problems, if you’re eating all the right things but in the wrong way.
