What age can you take IMODIUM®?
Adults
The recommended dosage for adults is 2 tablets/capsules (4mg) to start. This can be followed by 1 tablet/capsule (2mg) for each loose stool that follows.
Don’t take more than 4 tablets/capsules (8mg) for IMODIUM® Dual Action, or 6 tablets/capsules (12mg) for IMODIUM® Originals, Instants and SoftGels per day. If your attack lasts for more than 48 hours, speak to your doctor.
Children
IMODIUM® is suitable for children aged 12 years and over.
The recommended dosage for children aged 12 and over is 1 tablet followed by one tablet after each episode of diarrhoea for IMODIUM® Dual Action, or 2 tablets/capsules initially followed by 1 tablet/capsule after each diarrhoea episode for IMODIUM® Original and Instants.
It’s important that adults and children do not become dehydrated. Contact your GP or pharmacist if you or your child has symptoms of dehydration. They may recommend an oral rehydration solution.
Here’s some advice for managing your diarrhoea:
Fizzy drinks and fruit juice can make diarrhoea worse and so should be avoided.
Take frequent sips of water to stay hydrated.
It may help to avoid foods that are fatty or spicy.
If you or your child’s diarrhoea persists for more than 48 hours, or you’re otherwise concerned about their health, you should consult your doctor.
Can you take IMODIUM® when pregnant or breastfeeding?
As with many medicines, IMODIUM® should not be used when you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.
If you’re pregnant or caring for a newborn, diarrhoea can be the last thing you need. But, while you can’t use IMODIUM®, you can try to look after yourself by staying hydrated and resting. If you’re concerned, or have signs of dehydration, you should contact your GP or pharmacist.
Your baby is much more sensitive than you, so if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, you need to be careful about what you put in your body. When choosing an over-the-counter medicine, make sure you speak to your pharmacist and read the label to see whether the medicine is suitable for use in pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding.
IBS sufferers
If you’ve been diagnosed with IBS by a doctor, you can use Imodium® SoftGels , IMODIUM® Instants or IMODIUM® Originals to treat your acute episodes of diarrhoea associated with IBS if you are over 18 years.
